Last year in school I learned about homelessness with my teacher. Sometimes people don't have enough money for things like a home, food, furniture and it is not their fault. We read books and watched videos about this.
I did not know that it was a problem here in my community. I think that it is not fair that some people don't have the things that you and I may have.
I also learned that one person can make a difference if they show that they care.
Last year I learned that there is a foundation called the Ladybug Foundation that was started by a kid who was just a bit older than me. The foundation raised homes for people who needed it. When I thought about homelessness a bit more deeper I felt really sad. I think it doesn't matter who you are because everyone deserves things that you need to survive like food, shelter, clothes. I started to talk to my parents about this and I wanted to help. We researched about shelters here in Toronto.
We found a shelter called Youth Without Shelter who helped kids that are older than me and still may be in school that need a home and food. My mom called the shelter and then we decided to make a dinner. I went grocery shopping with my parents and bought things like salad, fruit, pasta, bread, chicken, gummies and vegetables. I spent the whole day cooking with my mom, dad and my mom's best friend. Some of the things I did was I made the salad and cut strawberries.
After my experience with cooking dinner I realized I should help more. So then I decided to create a blog and sell the game I made called SHEEP IN THE DESERT to raise money for kids at Youth Without Shelter.
My uncle and the shelter helped me create the blog.
My goal is to raise money for 50 kids at the shelter so that they can have 3 meals for at least one day. To do this I have to raise at least one hundred dollars. I called my blog game of hope because hope means believing that things will get better. I believe that this game will give money for food to Youth Without Shelter.
Can you help?
All you have to do is buy my computer game SHEEP IN THE DESERT for a minimum donation of $10.00. Click HERE to donate. (It’s easy! And if you donate $15.00 or more, you will get a tax receipt). When you donate, please say in the survey box that you are buying my game- SHEEP IN THE DESERT. This way the shelter will know how much money has been collected.
We have a feature article in the local newspaper detailing our efforts and story. You can read it by clicking HERE.
The donation page link and more details about this initiative can be found here: http://www.yws.on.ca/news
How to play my game:
- You are the sheep, you can't hit by the crabs or hit the cactus as you move in the maze.
- To move to the next level you have to go to the oasis.
- To break the rocks you have get the pick axe hidden in every level.
- For extra points collect the cabbage.
- To move press arrows on your computer keyboard.

Great work Vivek and hope you raise lots of money for this great cause. Let's all share this on Facebook and email this blog to friends.
ReplyDeleteContinue to write on your Blog Vivek to keep us updated on your activities. Is there a way for your Youth without Shelter to post how much your game has raised so far and maybe even keep an ongoing or realtime counter on their webpage?
Congratulations again !
Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI am wondering how much I rasied to. Thank you for shareing this. Do you like my game?
People have stero types about homeless people like they are not smart but in the pictures I posted they are painted by the kids at the homeless shelter which shows that they are creative and have skills like me and you.
Vivek, it was so great to meet with you and hear about how you want to support homeless youth at Youth Without Shelter. You are very bright and it is amazing that you are eager to make a difference.
ReplyDeleteIn the past four days, you have already raised $415! Thank you for making this possible!
Vivek you have already raised $415.
ReplyDeleteWe are so excited to hear this!!
Maybe you need to increase your goal.
We agree it is not fair that such inequities exist.
Lots of love mommy & daddy
Today I bought three dounits and they cost $3. In the homeless youth shelter the budget is $2.50 for 3 meals in one whole day for one kid.Do you think that this is fair?
ReplyDeleteHi Vivek

James P.
Great Job Vivek!!! You've already exceeded your goal - Congratulations!! You've really made a big difference and you're helping the foundation help other kids just like you. It's really amazing.
ReplyDeleteRemember when you had this idea and we talked about it with your mom (at Tutti Fruiti) - see, it didn't take that much to actually make this happen and your already making a big difference.
Your Nani told me this when I was a kid: Whenever you have an idea or set a goal for yourself there's nothing stopping you from doing it, except for yourself. Always persevere and stay determined.
Great Job!
Lots of Love,
Arun
I am wondering how much money I raised so far.
ReplyDeleteI liked what Nani told you Arun Mamu. Its very inspiring.
Vivek, you have now raised $655! That is incredible!

ReplyDeleteHi Shelley, I want to let you know how impressed I am with Vivek's blog and his community activism. I visited his site and was so moved! I made a donation and feel very good about it. I wanted to respond to Vivek's blog but couldn't figure out how. I clicked around but didn't find where I should be, so could you share this email with him please. He is a fine young man with great ideas. He is making the world a better place and I am so proud to know him.
Thanks,
Gail
Vivek please read message below that I recieved:
ReplyDeleteHello Vivek,
What a wonderful idea!
Your initiative is inspirational!
Joanne
Hi Viivek,
ReplyDeleteI also find it hard to think about young people who don't have homes of their own or families to take care of them. I think your cause is a very good one and I congratulate you on your very successful blog and game fundraising . You are making the world a better place.
Nicola
I'm happy to make the world a better place my new goal is $4000. I think I can do this. Thank you to whoever bougt my game.
DeleteHello again,
DeleteI was reading through the other comments. I am thinking about what you said about stereotypes....about how everyone has talents and skills no matter who they are or what their life situation is. That's another way that you are making the world a better place Vivek. By thinking differently about people and by challenging some of the stereotypes about homeless people.
I'm not very good at the game yet, but I'm working on it:)
It's great that you've set a new goal for yourself. I'll check back again to see how you're doing towards that target.
Nicola
I presented to my class about stereotypes about homeless people. I did this to make my class have more knowledge and not believe what everybody says. Tell me if you beat the levels in my game.
DeleteHi again Vivek,
DeleteIt has been too long since I checked in. You have raised so much more money since I checked in with you. It looks like you have raised a lot of awareness too, by talking to your class about stereotypes, bringing visitors to your school, getting in the newspaper and connecting with Me to We. You are learning about the big issues involved and helping others learn too.
I haven't played your game very much because I have been working at learning some new technology skills myself in a class I am taking...My group and I used my video project to raise awareness of issues of poverty too.
I wonder if you are interested in seeing what some other young people are doing to make a difference in their communities. You might get some ideas for your fundraising work, or just enjoy reading about other kids who care about the world and people like you do. I found out about this boy from Twitter...he started an organization to help build playgrounds for kids in remote communities in Canada that don't have them. http://northernstarfish.org/about-2/
It's interesting to read the comments and hear about all the things that have been going on. Keep on making a difference Vivek. You're making the world a better place.
Nicola
I am going to visit http://northernstarfish.org/about-2/. It sounds like a great idea. Thank you for sharing this information.
DeleteVivek we are so proud of you!!! We think you can reach your new goal ...let's see how long it takes. Lots of love mommy & daddy
ReplyDeleteI hope I reach my goal too. I also want to know how much I have raised so far?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Vivek! So far you have raised $1,180!
ReplyDeleteI just ran and told parents I raised $1,180. I am excited. I think I might rase more money.
DeleteMy nani reads my blog and likes it. She says its important for everyone to have food.
Wow, great initiative Vivek. You can achieve anything you want. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I hope that the youth shelter used the money for healthy and yummy meals.
DeleteI am trying to $4000. Can you help spread the word about my blog? I still check my blog all the time.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that 10,000 youth are homeless in Toronto each year?
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that many youth are homeless every year, it's staggering! I feel badly about that like you, because kids shouldn't have to be in that type of situation. You're making a big difference Vivek - good job!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that everybody sees my article so that I can spread the word about my blog.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.yorkregion.com/news/article/1571078--video-game-inspires-help-for-homeless
I think you are making a big difference. I hope you reach your new goal!! Love mommy
ReplyDeleteHi Vivek,
ReplyDeleteGreat job on the article in The Liberal!
Here's some YWS food costs you may find interesting to learn:
-$120 provides chicken (thighs) for one meal to feed 50 youth
-$120 buys milk for one week for 50 youth (12+ liters)
-$728 provides sweetened cereal for one month at YWS
Your support will be helping us with these costs!
The facts you shared make me feel very very happy. I like the way the money is spent. Have I raised more money? Are you coming to my class on the 21st?
DeleteHow much money have I raised?
ReplyDeleteThank you to YWS for my plaque. Everytime I look at it, it remind me of how much I am helping my community.
Vivek-how much money have you raised? It seems to be going to good use! You are doing a great job! It's so important to be persistent with this- you have dedicated so much time and effort into this great cause- im so proud of you!
ReplyDeleteHi Vivek. It was great chatting with you on the phone this evening and I am very impressed with all that you've done in supporting Youth Without Shelter. I've downloaded your game, which looks amazing, and made a donation. I look forward to playing the game and will show it to my kids so they can play too. You're a terrific boy!! Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteDid your kids like my game?
DeleteHi Vivek,
ReplyDeleteYou have now raised $1230! That's awesome!
It was great to come in and speak to your class. All your classmates seemed very interested about youth homelessness and asked lots of great questions. Also, it sounds amazing that your teacher would like to do a food drive for YWS. Thank you for making all of this possible!
We have collected over 20 cans of food in my class.
DeleteThat's amazing Vivek and will be a big help at YWS. Thanks to you and your class!
DeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteThat is very exciting Vivek! You are really making such a difference at a young age:) You need to continue to tell more people about your blog so that you reach your goal. Love Mom & Dad
I heard that some shelters are going to be closing. Is that true? If more shelter close more people will be homeless. I think more shelters need to open.
ReplyDeleteToday I came home from school and I got mail from ME to WE. They said my game is awesome and that I am helping my community alot. I felt happy to know that I am makeing a difference. I learned that anyone can be a social advocate if they find something that inspires them. I am wondering how much money I raised?
ReplyDeleteVivek ...here is a message for you:
ReplyDeleteI am so thrilled that the work our class did together, has helped to lead Vivek on such a wonderful journey. I know that much of the credit lies with the support you and your family has given him. I would love to invite Vivek into the classroom to share his experiences. I believe that seeing Vivek and hearing about what he has accomplished would be far more impactful for my students than simply hearing it from me.
Please tell Vivek how very proud I am of him.
Ms. Simon
Hi Vivek,
ReplyDeleteI like what you wrote in your previous comment: "I learned that anyone can be a social advocate if they find something that inspires them." That is such a great statement.
You have raised $1305 so far! Thank you for continuing to support YWS!
I am thinking of how to spread the word about my blog and help more homeless youth. Soon I'm going to make another game to sell.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKqf0BvAAaQ
ReplyDeleteWatch this video its about a homeless boy in korea who makes me inspired. Homeless youth have special talents just like us and its not fair that they don't have the same things that we take for granted.Tell me what you think after watching
Hi Vivek! I am so proud of your perseverance in reaching your goal. You are an inspiration to other children and adults, we can all learn to give back and keep at it! Keep up the good work. Anju
ReplyDeletePS one of my friends emailed me to say "Its pretty amazing what Vivek is doing!" Good job!
ReplyDeleteI went to a conference called ameno to promote blog. I met lots people and some kids from highschool. The highschool kids said Wow, I'm so young and making a difference. They want me to come to their school, I feel excited but I hope they remember. Soon I hope to post a new game.
ReplyDeleteI think its not fair how some people take money for granted and they don't know how it feels to have no money. This summer I realized that activities like lessons cost so much money and it can be hard for some people to afford
ReplyDeleteHi Vivek, I hope you're having a good summer break! Thank you for agreeing to speak at Youth Without Shelter's upcoming appreciation night. We're looking forward to hearing you share your experience!
ReplyDeleteDear Vivek,
ReplyDeleteI am very proud of your dedication to helping homeless youth. I am looking forward to hearing you speak on September 19.
With love,
Daddy

ReplyDeleteI am excited to make and serve food this Saturday for youth without shelter. I am looking forward to meeting the youth and finding out how my blog is helping the shelter . I am also wandering how much money I raised?
ReplyDeleteOn Aug. 24,2013 I went shopping and made food for the youth again. At home I made a yummy salad, I cut the vegetables and my whole family helped cook the food. My mom and dad made rice, pasta, indian food, my masi and masar (aunt uncle) brought chicken and garlic bread. My mamu and mami (aunt uncle) made dessert and my grandparents took care of drinks. I got to serve food to kids and I felt so happy to meet all of them. All of the kids at the shelter were so polite. I liked talking to them. People should really help, the kids hard life but they still persevere. I also met Mike who works there and he was really cool and cared about the kids. I think going to try to organize a food drive at school soon.
ReplyDeleteI Feel Good About What I am doing.
Vivek YOU SHOULD FEEL GOOD about what you are doing. We are so proud of you. It is always amazing to go to YWS and have the opportunity to get to know the youth there. They are talented young individuals. We are looking forward to hearing you speak on Septemeber 19:) We can all make a difference if we work together. Thank you Vivek.

ReplyDeleteYour speech at Youth Without Shelter's appreciation evening last night was so incredible. Many people in the audience were very impressed and inspired by you. Thank you so much for speaking to everyone and sharing how you are making such a difference at YWS! You have raised $1380 to date! That is amazing!
September 19 2013 was a very exciting day for me. I was asked to speak at Crowne Plaza about my blog which I created 1 year ago. I was very nervous when I got on the stage. When I got off the stage so many people asked me about how did I do this and told me that they were amazed by what I am doing. After this I knew that I was going to help alot of youth. Here is question we can all think about:
ReplyDeleteLife's most persistent question is what are you doing for others?
- Martin Luther King Jr.
“It is our choices, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
ReplyDelete-J.K Rowling
This quote means that if you make a chioce to help people it shows that you are a good person
I am in grade 5 and am helping make hygiene kits for kids at YWS. I am also going to cook meals this summer for YWS. I know this will make my Nani and Nana happy because they believe in sava
